The Oregon NASA Space Grant sponsored a contingent of students and teachers at the 2014 RockOn! Sounding Rocket Workshop at NASA Wallops Flight Facility, in Chincoteague, VA. The Oregon contingent included three teams of students from Oregon Institute of Technology, Linn-Benton Community College, and Oregon State University, and a fourth team of educators from Tigard High School, McMinnville School District, and Silverton High School.

RockOn!, a week long rocketry workshop, is hosted by the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia and NASA Wallops Flight Facility, with funding provided by NASA Education and individual state Space Grant Consortia. The four Oregon teams were part of a larger group of 20 teams total that built scientific payloads or RocketSats that included an accelerometer, a Geiger counter, a Gyroscope sensor, and pressure and temperature sensors, using a microcontroller system based on the Arduino platform. The workshop culminated with the payloads being launched aboard a two-stage Terrier-Improved Orion Sounding Rocket that went 73.3 miles above the Earth’s service, 11.3 miles into space.
