Learning from the Edge of Space – Space Grant Program to Livestream the Total Solar Eclipse

More than a 1000 students from Oregon to South Carolina launched over 70 high-altitude balloons along the path of the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 to livestream the event from the edge of space. The brainchild of Montana Space Grant Consortium director, Dr. Angela Des Jardins and her team, the program is run from Montana State University in Bozeman, MT and funded in part by NASA Office of Education, NASA Science Mission Directorate, the NASA Balloon Program Office, and several corporate sponsors. Over 20 Space Grant consortia have balloon teams participating in the event, Oregon being first to capture the event by launching a balloon from an OSU research vessel off the west coast, followed by several other teams launching throughout the state. Consecutive balloons will be launched from the states that follow, with South Carolina capturing the end of the path of totality from a balloon launched from a boat off the east coast.
