National Space Grant Resources
NASA initiated the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program, also known as Space Grant, in 1989. Space Grant is a national network of colleges and universities. These institutions are working to expand opportunities for Americans to understand and participate in NASA's aeronautics and space projects by supporting and enhancing science and engineering education, research and public outreach efforts. The Space Grant national network includes over 850 affiliates from universities, colleges, industry, museums, science centers, and state and local agencies. These affiliates belong to one of 52 consortia in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The National Space Grant Foundation is a tax exempt organization whose purpose is to support and enhance the Space Grant Consortia in every state to carry out education, research, and public outreach activities in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology and additional fields, related to space, aeronautics, aviation, and Earth system science. The National Council of Space Grant Directors was formed by the Directors of each of the state based programs in orer to aid in the development and the evolution of the Space Grant Program, increase communication among the Directors of Space Grant programs, provide a forum for mutual support of the directors in the performance of their respective responsibilities for leadership to their individual Space Grant programs, identify areas of common interests in which cooperation and collaboration among programs may prove beneficial, develop mechanisms to accomplish such cooperation, and serve as a liaison between Space Grant Consortia and external national and international organizations. The National Space Grant Alliance Inc. (NSGA) is a nonprofit, incorporated 501(c)(4) organization working to promote, expand and enhance the capacity of the United States to carry out education, research, and public outreach activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and additional fields, related to space, aeronautics and Earth system science. The Alliance endeavors to increase the financial and governmental support available to its membership, publicize the objectives and relevant activities of the Alliance and its members, influence the activities of the local, state, and federal governments on behalf of the Alliance’s membership, and develop mutually beneficial relationships among private sector organizations, government agencies, colleges and universities, and the Alliance’s membership.
