Project Description

This presents the results of AIAA’s Affiliate Faculty Research Incubator Program (AFRIP) award. Our mission is to provide tools and support to engage engineering students in academic research experiences, team-building and problem-solving opportunities, foster hands-on learning through AIAA projects, and create a lasting infrastructure to support AIAA for future years. We overcame restrictions preventing access to AIAA workspaces by implementing safety education, equipment, and procedures. Purchasing student project supplies created an abundance of teamwork and mentoring opportunities between new and experienced students, resulting in the biggest population increase in AIAA history. Funds spent on student project supplies ensured landmark milestones for our clubs, namely the hot-fire of our liquid rocket engine, a new altitude record for our two-stage rocket team, and the flight of our agricultural drone. A key outreach milestone for improving relationships with K12 schools was an L1 rocket certification build day in collaboration with Yamhill Carlton High School’s rocketry program and the Society of Women Engineers. The event focused on empowering students to connect with peers and learn basic rocketry within an aerospace engineering environment. Perhaps the most significant opportunity AFRIP enabled was connecting with other AIAA student branches via the 2024 Region VI Student Conference and collaborative expositions with other schools. Overall, we built stronger relationships with DEIA groups on and off campus, leading to new collaborative opportunities and learning experiences that will thrive in future years.
