Project Description

Thanks to the generous support of the Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium, the George Fox University Rocket Team presents Trillium II. The Team and rocket will soon be on their way to compete in the 10,000’ category of the 2025 International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC). The team is fortunate to have a Tripoli Rocketry Association Level 3 Certified mentor and Flyer of Record to help guide them through the designing, building, testing and launching phases for Trillium II. The rocket is designed and built by students using both commercially available and in-house manufactured parts and will use an Aerotech M1939W Commercial Off the Shelf solid-propellant motor for both a full-scale planned test launch in the Spring as well as the 2025 IREC competition launch. To save time while the rocket is on the launch pad, a hatch door has been integrated into the rocket’s sidewall to more easily access the avionic components needed for flight. The rocket’s payload is an experimental 2U CubeSat that will acquire strain versus time data using 2024 and 7075 aluminum samples and compare the results to the expected strain based on the impulse curve data of the rocket. The team is documenting their progress and results via a mini documentary that will be released after the competition, as well as produce a technical report of the project. The GFU Rocket Team is excited to showcase our engineering efforts on the world stage at the 2025 IREC competition.
