Lipids can be preserved in sedimentary rocks alongside fossilized materials. We want to use lab equipment available to us to extract and identify these lipids, in an attempt to characterize the preserved lipids found alongside different fossils. Primary literature research describes two different methods that are commonly used, soxhlet and saponification extractions, both are viable approaches. Soxhlet extractions involve continuous solvent extraction in specialized glassware with a siphon. This approach is most commonly used and produces high extraction levels due to the continuous extraction method. Saponification is a method of turning fatty acids into their conjugate bases. It is commonly used with chlorophyll or other bio-matter, and is also effective with sedimentary rock. Both soxhlet and saponification extractions could be done in conjunction with a comparison of the results.
