Our Southwestern Oregon Community College SPEAR team looks to continue our collection and analysis of micrometeorite candidates throughout the southern Oregon coast and our involvement in Near-Earth Asteroid discoveries through the IASC collaboration. This internships seeks to bring on student leads willing to coordinate team activities with each project, extend our collaborations and partnerships with participating K-12 schools and local community businesses and organizations and help to facilitate collaboration and further analysis opportunities with our 4-year research institution partners.
This position serves as the student leads for community and citizen science projects involving micrometeorite collection and asteroid identification. The position also has a strong community outreach and K-12 STEM engagement component which would see students involved in K-12 classrooms and community events.
Our student IASC leads responsibilities would include leading a team of community college researchers and K-12 student participants through monthly campaign searches for near-earth asteroids, planning and organizing team meetings, training new team members on Astrometrica software, and giving weekly reports to the greater SPEAR group. Project lead will also maintain a data sheet for the observations monthly, and submit completed reports by the end of each campaign. Our micrometeorite collection team lead will be responsible for the planning and execution of team field work days (magnetic trap placement and collection), coordination with local collection sites to expand the range of collection zones. Student lead would also be responsible for recruiting potential K-12 partners to expand our collection network.
Due to software requirements, PC computer access is preferred for IASC campaigns. Basic understanding of microscope operation is preferred for micrometeorite analysis, but training is available.
